Snorkeling at "Monkey Island"
Cayo Santiago is a 38 acre island located 1 km off the coastal village of Punta Santiago in the municipality of Humacao. Snorkeling here is perfect for the experienced snorkeler as well as beginners. Just a short snorkel from the boat is an old sunken sugar cane barge lying in four to eight feet of water. This artificial reef has become the home to schools of French grunts, parrotfish, squirrelfish, starfish and puffers.....just to name a few!

After you're finished snorkeling you can sit back and relax with a cold drink while watching some of the Rhesus monkeys playing up and down the shoreline. All of the rhesus monkeys on Cayo Santiago are free- ranging and maintained under semi-natural conditions. The island serves as a research center for the University of Puerto Rico and the National Institute of Health. Thanks to years and years of research, the Cayo population of rhesus monkeys represents one of the best studied populations of animals in the world.
